Tom McCue Got It Right: Powerful Symbolism

October 21, 2008

Today’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch ran the following Letter to the Editor from Tom McCue of Wildwood, Missouri.

“Emily Rasinski took a remarkable photo at the Obama rally in St. Louis on Oct. 18. Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, was speaking on the Arch grounds. Ms. Rasinski’s photo showed Mr. Obama alone on a small stage surrounded by a sea of people stretching off into the distance. At the top of the photo, in the far distance, was the Old Courthouse — the site of the Dred Scott trial, the result of which most agree created the beginning of the Civil War.

The symbolism was powerful; the beginning and the end of racial division, with a new beginning. Although the Courthouse in the background of this picture was not mentioned in any of the news services, I am convinced that this iconic photo will come to symbolize the day we turned the corner in this country toward a new beginning.”
