April 21, 2009

chinese-culture-days-2009-photoThis photo is too beautiful to size it smaller. I’m really looking forward to the sights, sounds, good smells and tastes of this annual festival this weekend.

Ticket information is on the > Missouri Botanical Garden’s Web site <, which I’ve linked here.

I’m going to copy/paste the schedule of events, which doesn’t include the unofficial events of eating and socializing and enjoying the entire gardens.

I discovered that the annual Chinese Culture Days celebration is this weekend (April 25, 26).
Unfortunately, I will not be attending as once again the date has moved up.
When I first attended, it occured over Memorial Day weekend. Last year, I had friends travel up from Joplin for the event. In January, they made plans, got approval for time off from work and the celebration was celebrated before Memorial day, and they could not attend.
This year, the celebration is in April. The first publicity about the weekend event is on Wednesday. I will not be able to attend because I have committments. Last year, the crowd was smaller than the Memorial day Weekend celebration, I can only guess how small the crowd will be due to lack of word getting out into the community.
I do hope the Chinese Cultural Committee coordinates next years celebration so that people can plan and attend. Perhaps they should talk to the Japanese committee who consistantly holds there celebration during Labor Day. Committing to a 3-day weekend holiday should improve attendance and allow those of us not living in St. Louis to be alerted to the event so plans can be made to attend.
    Thank You
    John W. Smith

I think it can be a hard-go for the festival to draw this weekend, when it’s up against another for Earth Day in Forest Park. I was at last year’s Chinese Culture Days, and I agree that it was a small crowd than when it was held over a three-day weekend. I do know some people in the Chinese community here, who are on the planning committee. I will pass your comments along to them. Let’s see if we can persuade them to get it back to Labor Day weekend. I prefer the late summer for it anyway, as it’s much less likely to be rainy or cold! The weather here this time of year is very unpredictable. John, thanks for taking the time to visit and to post a comment. Come back soon.
